Between 1958 and 1963, the paths of Burdon, Chandler, Price, Steel and Valentine crossed many times playing in a series of local bands in their home city of Newcastle, England (The Pagan Jazzmen, The Pagans, The Kansas City Five, The Contours, the Wild Cats and the Alan Price Combo). All five first played together in the one band in September 1963 as The Alan Price Combo and first performed gigs as The Animals in London in December 1963.

Alan Price left the band in April 1965, Mickey Gallagher filled in on keyboards prior to Dave Rowberry joining the band in May 1965 for the Scandinavian tour.

The Animals formed a big band to play at the 5th Annual British Jazz & Blues Festival in Richmond, England 05-Aug-65 .

John Steel played his last gig with The Animals at Birmingham University on 05-Mar-66. Barry Jenkins played his first gig wityh The Animals at The Olympia in Paris on 15-Mar-66.The Animals offically ceased to exist on 05-Sep-66 (the last studio recordings were in Los Angeles with Frank Zappa on 04-Jul-66 and the band continued its US tour for 5 weeks before the final split).
   
 

 For subsequent reunions of the original 1960's line-up of The Animals refer to The Original Animals in the Band Members section of this Bandography.   

 
In June 2003, Eric Burdon announced that his band Eric Burdon & The New Animals
(which had in 2000 evolved from Eric Burdon's i Band)
would be known as Eric Burdon & The Animals
