Eric Burdon is one of rock music's legends: having lead such bands as "The Animals" and "War", and having written and having performed some of rock's most significant songs including, "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place", "Spill The Wine" and "The House Of The Rising Sun".
In this interview with James O'Brien, Eric Burdon reflects on some of the amazing people he has met over his career, including Nina Simone, who he met soon after he recorded a version of her song, "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood". "I think I was one of the few white people who could communicate with her", he says of their meeting.
His one great regret is never having approached Elvis. "I used to live in Palm Streets and see him a lot... but I always felt like I was intruding". After the death of Elvis, Burden subsequently discovered Elvis was actually a fan with more more recordings in his collection by "The Animals" than any other non-American act. "We could have been riding harleys together", reflects Eric.
Now aged in his early 60s, Eric Burdon still tours the world. While he concedes it is sometimes a bit of gruel, other times he likens performing on stage to "driving a new Mercedes along on an autobahn in Germany". He says his performance recently at the Byron Bay Blues Festival is an example of the latter, where everything came together beautifully.
