| THE ANIMALS | |||
It is now 40 years since the the original band The Animals was formed in Newcastle, England. The use of the band name Animals and The Animals has become quite confusing over the years, particular during the 1990's when ex-members of the 1960's line-ups of The Animals and Eric Burdon & The Animals formed recording and/or touring bands which have have been called and/or marketed as Animals or The Animals. The following summarises how Kojak has identified and/or delineated between the various bands and band names in the construction of this web site: |
|||
| The Animals | The original England based 1963-66 band (Burdon, Price, Valentine, Chandler and Steel plus replacements Rowberry for Price and later Jenkins for Steel). | ||
| Eric Burdon & The Animals | The USA based 1967/69 band line-ups: | ||
| 1) Burdon, Jenkins, Weider, Briggs and McCulloch ('Winds of Change' and 'Twain Shall Meet' albums). This band is sometimes referred to as Eric Burdon & The New Animals probably because of the reference to "The New Animals" in the artwork on the cover of the 'Winds OF Change" album. | |||
| 2) Burdon, Jenkins, Weider, Briggs, McCulloch and Bruno ('Every One Of Us' album - Zoot Money was listed as George Bruno due to legal complications). | |||
| 3) Burdon, Jenkins, Weider, Money and Summers ('Love Is' double album). | |||
| The Original Animals | The 1975 ('Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted' album) and 1983 ("Ark" and "Rip It To Shreds - Greatest Hits Live!' albums) reunions of the original 1963-66 band (Burdon, Price, Valentine, Chandler and Steel plus "extras" Grant and Money re the 1983 reunion). | ||
| Animals II | Valentine formed a band in 1993 to play Animals' music and was joined by Steel in 1994. Kane, Hutchinson, Dawson and Bland joined the band in 1996 and it performed and recorded during 1996-99 as Animals II. | ||
| Valentine's "The Animals" | 1999/01 group (Valentine, Steel and Rowberry plus Rodford and Liddle) toured and recorded as The Animals. Cronin replaced Liddle briefly in 2001. | ||
| McCulloch's "The Animals" | 1990's band formed by ex Eric Burdon & The Animals bassist McCulloch but not featuring any other 1960's members of the of The Animals or Eric Burdon & The Animals. Numerous CD issues have been made during the 1990's and 2000's misleadingly marketing this band as Animals or The Animals and even The Animals featuring Eric Burdon. The CD's contain covers of 1960's hits made famous by The Animals and Eric Burdon & The Animals plus new songs recorded in the 1990's by McCulloch's band. | ||
| Animals & Friends | Steel, Rowberry and Rodford plus others performed gigs as Animals & Friends in the early 2000's (prior to Rowberry's death in April 2003). | ||
| Eric Burdon's New Animals | From around 1988 through to 1991, Burdon performed in various band line-ups with musicians such as Robbie Kreiger, Brian Auger and Dave Meros. In 1992 he formed the Eric Burdon - Brian Auger Band which included Dave Meros and Larry Wilkins. When this line-up disbanded in 1994, Burdon formed Eric Burdon's i Band (Burdon, Meros, Wilkins, Craney and Restum). After several line up changes and the release of 'The Official Live Bootleg Album #1' and 'The Official Live Bootleg Album #2", this band in 1998 became Eric Burdon & The New Animals (Burdon, Morse, Restum, Meros and Dunbar - later Gerschwitz replaced Morse on keyboards and Pershey replaced Dunbar on drums). | ||
| Eric Burdon's Animals | In April 2003, Burdon announced that the band (Burdon, Meros, Restum, Gerschwitz and Pershey) had dropped the word "new" from their name to become Eric Burdon & The Animals. | ||
